Opening in 1994, Comic Connections is Oxfordshire’s longest running comic-book store of all time.
Phase 1 was from 1994-1999, under the management of Glyn Smith, the store opened originally in Calthorpe Street before moving to George Street in 1996. During this time we survived the great 90s comic recession, the near bankruptcy of Marvel comics (as well as the shambles of Marvel’s own Heroes World distribution), and the Great Pokemon Gold-Rush of 98 / 99.
Phase 2 began in the year 2000 when we moved to our current premises at 4a Parsons Street, and lasted through to 2008. The bigger premises meant we could increase our stock-holding and approach the business as a professional book-seller might. Sid took over the running of many of the stores operations, and during this period our stock of graphic novels increased from a handful to over 2,000, and over 30,000 back issues in store; one of the most competitive ranges in the country!
Phase 3 lasted from 2008 – 2017, during which time store runners Glyn and Tim had to contend with the Global Recession, however they weathered the storm by expanding the business outward into the digital realm, selling increasingly on eBay and Amazon, as well as continuing to serve our regular (and essential) Pull List customers.
Phase 4 began in the closing stages of 2017, with Glyn taking a backseat to the running of the store after 23 years, enabling Sid to return as manager of the store. Together with Lisa from Spa Town Comics, the focus was on streamlining store operations. Expanding choice, availability and giving an easier shopping experience for all of our customers, and changes to the Pull List service and deeper discounts reflected this change, making it easier than ever before for customers to alter their orders on a daily basis.
In late 2019, just as the store turned 25 years old, Glyn sold the business to Jamie and Karl from Collectors Assemble starting Phase 5, putting the shop in very capable hands to get it through the next 25 years!
In the past we have hosted in store signing appearances from Jonathan Ross, Dave Prowse (Darth Vader), Warrick Davis (Wicket), Jeremy Bulloch (Boba Fett), Sarah Graley (Rick and Morty artist), Transformers alumni Simon Furman and Andrew Wildman, Liam Sharp, Dan Abnett, Simon Bisley, Alan Grant, Charlie Adlard and many more. Keep an eye on our social media to see what other surprises and appearances we have in store for the next 25 years of business!
